When planning a trip to Indonesia, it is advisable to take the following public holidays into account.
- 29 March 2025 Nyepi/’Silent Day’: ONLY IN BALI! especially the day before Nyepi is a day when many ceremonies are held and the ‘Ogoh-Ogoh’ is worn through the Balinese streets. The new year is ushered in with reflection and silence. Traveling to, from or to Bali is impossible on this day. You can usually use the facilities of the hotel/resort, but appropriate silence is polite.
- 12 May 2025 Waisak/Birth of Budha: Beautiful day to experience! Please take into account large crowds at Borobudur and the surrounding area (Magelang, Yogyakarta).
- 1 – 30 March 2025 Ramadan/Fasting month: The fasting month mosques are more active and some restaurants only open their doors at sunset. Ramadan ends on March 30 and is celebrated with parades with floats and many prayers.

These 2 days and usually 4 days before and a week after are days off. Everyone moves from their workplaces/cities to their home towns/villages in the week before Eid al-Fitr to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr with family. On certain islands this causes a true exodus. Trains, planes and ferries must be booked well in advance. Please contact us if you are traveling during this period!
- 6 June 2025 Eid Idul Adha/Slaughter Festival: Celebrated from sunset June 16 (mosque is more active) until noon June 17, after which shops are usually open again.
- 17 August 2025 Hari Merdeka/Independence Day is generally a day of celebration in Indonesia. Shops and sights are usually open as usual.
